One of our investments in pallet equipment is the Storti Flex 50 pallet machine. Made in Italy, the Storti is capable of nailing 70 boards per minute and seven pallets per minute. The Storti is a highly precise machine, able to work accurately to within a single millimetre.
The Storti will only work if complete accuracy is achieved in the set-up process. Consequently, it consistently produces pallets to exact specifications.
We have two very productive, one-person operation Viking Champion QC306 pallet nailers. The Viking is capable of manufacturing 600 two-way pallets every day, and we keep them very busy at Somerlap.
Our latest investment is the Vanderloo, a four-way pallet machine. The reliability and efficiency of the Vanderloo means it can produce a complete four-way pallet every 30 seconds with two operators.
Somerlap have offered a pallet collection service for many years. Most of the pallets we collect are repaired and resold, and those which are damaged beyond repair are turned into woodchip. Our highly efficient Zerma woodchipper, upgraded in 2018, can produce 3,000kg of woodchip per hour.
The grade of our woodchip is 30mm, making it ideal for use as both groundcover and biomass boiler fuel. Our kiln and factory heating are both powered by our own recycled woodchip.
The Zerma uses a large magnet to extract any metal elements used to hold pallets together. This scrap metal is also recycled, making the entire process even more sustainable.
Our five acre Somerset site offers plenty of storage for pallets. We invested in the installation of modern buildings which enable the dry storage of all our customers pallets and timber packaging. After an order is placed, pallets can be quickly manufactured and safely stored, ready for quick delivery when required.
Our modern kiln is fuelled by the burning of our own recycled woodchip. The kiln is capable of heat-treating or drying 1000 pallets per cycle. Our kiln facility ensures that timber is controlled and inspected throughout the drying process. Kiln dried pallets split and shift far less than wet timber left to air dry.
Any pallets heat-treated by our kiln will comply with ISPM15 regulations, meaning they are suitable for transporting export goods around the world. When pallets are kiln dried, the reduction in moisture content means their weight is also reduced. Subsequently, kiln dried pallets cost less to transport.
