Working with local business Brackenburn to create super fuel

Brackenburn create eco-fuelSomerlap Pallets are delighted to have worked with local business Brackenburn to create a new super fuel.

A new type of fuel, made in Somerset

Brackenburn’s Brackettes are a new type of eco-friendly fuel created entirely from bracken, the large, tough, fern-like plant which can be found across the Mendip Hills.

The company’s facility was officially opened last October by local dairy farmer and Glastonbury Festival Founder Michael Eavis, who has declared himself a big fan. The Brackettes have since been featured on Countryfile and interest in the fuel has rocketed.

John Burton, one of the founders of Brackenburn, said: “The inspiration for this came about when a senior warden on the Mendip Hills suggested that bracken might be good for burning. It was an incredibly inspiring moment and since that day we have been obsessed about making it a reality. We passionately believe we have created an alternative fuel source that people will want to burn.”

The bracken fuel burns hotter and for longer than oak and, once burnt, the remaining potash can be used as a nutrient-rich garden fertiliser.

An environmentally friendly heating solution powered by Somerlap

Based at Puxton Park, Brackenburn are just up the road from our site. Somerlap Pallets supply the business with recycled woodchip to burn in their biomass boiler. The biomass boiler is used to dehydrate the bracken before it is turned into briquettes.

Somerlap Pallet’s recycled woodchip is made from pallets that can no longer be repaired. The pallets are collected by Somerlap from local businesses, saving them money in the process.
